Although fencing has been around for quite some time, it has recently been introduced in Cayman by the Cayman Islands Fencing Federation (CIFF), which is the governing body for Olympic Fencing in the Cayman Islands.
Founded in 2019, the Cayman Islands Fencing Federation (CIFF) is a registered, non-profit organisation and the national governing body for the sport of fencing. It is a member of the Cayman Islands Olympic Committee and is in the process of becoming recognised by the Federation International Escrime (FIE).
The CIFF offers fencing lessons for children and adults from the age of 8+ in all three fencing disciplines (foil, épée and saber) after-school and in the evenings during the week, and during the day on Saturdays. The CIFF also holds local competitions among fencers and offers special events and fencing demonstrations.
Fencing gives athletes a full body workout. Often referred to as "physical chess”, it is a sport that also requires a great deal of mental focus. Good fencers learn how to out-think their opponents quickly in order to score a hit, or point. Fencing is also a lifetime sport. Youth typically are mature enough to start the sport at around age 8 and can continue to grow and compete as fencing athletes well into their 60s. As a result, the sport can be started at any time in life and it is possible to progress from beginner to elite athlete in as little as five years. All it takes is the discipline to practice and a love of the sport!
