The Hazard Management of the Cayman Islands (HMCI) has begun the development of the Island-wide Emergency Alert System that will notify the public when a threat is declared.
A National Emergency Notification System (NENS) is in development and the first phase has now been established, which allows NENS to interrupt all FM radio channels in an emergency.
The second phase is expected to come online at the end of December 2021, and that includes an app that residents can sign up for to receive emergency alerts (for significant threat events only).
The third phase includes a wider range of solutions, including the establishment of a cell broadcast system which will permit ‘Amber Alert’ type messages to be sent directly to mobile phones.
The NENS will eventually include a broad range of alert mechanisms but residents are also encouraged to establish a family and business hazard plan. For advice and up-to-date information of threats and warnings, follow the Hazard Management Facebook page (Caymanhazard) or Twitter Account (@CINEOC).
